Coming out of Bristol in the 90s, Trip Hop fused the downtempo breaks of rap with acid jazz, dub, psychedelica and a bass heavy approach to crate digging production. Pioneering acts like Massive Attack (esp Tricky’s influence) and Portishead reached huge commercial success. It held a lot in common with the other genres of the region (D&B, Dubstep, UKG) but could at once feel dark, experimental and akin to a breezy holiday. For those willing to search there’s artists still dropping fantastic trip hop productions today, not to mention the backlog of older records and especially CDs from the heyday of the movement. From chill out tents to after parties: let it be your guilty pleasure too.
